Reading/Writing Skills Level 1: This class is good for students who have mastered sounding out words and recognizing basic sight words, but are still practicing reading more than a few sentences or paragraphs at a time.  - Students should be able to read a book like this [slowly] and understand the main idea. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsAO2cOIj7M- (this is a general video from YouTube, and we have no affiliation with the creator). It's ok if students mispronounce words when reading, as long as they understand the general storyline.  - Students must be able to write up to 2 sentences independently. Sentences might have misspellings or missing punctuation. However, students need to be able to come up with an idea and write a sentence that conveys that idea. EXAMPLE: If given the question "What is your favorite food and why?", these are examples of acceptable, and unacceptable, answers... Ready for this class, minimum: I like pizza. chees is yummy *In this example, there is a missing period, missing capitalization, and "cheese" is spelled incorrectly. However, the student still expressed themselves in a way that the teacher can understand. Ready for this class, advanced: Pizza is my favorite food because I love chese. It is very good. I want to eat it every day! *In this example, the student misspelled cheese, but they were able to write three complete sentences with correct punctuation. This student may even be ready for level 2! Not ready for this class: pizza *In this example, the student is not able to write three sentences independently. Not ready for this class: i piza like, its gud cheese yum *In this example, the student is likely working on language development and spoken sentence structure. They will probably struggle to understand the books being read or the instructions for activities.
